A cross-reference provides a hyperlink between the text of a descriptive field in one entry and the term of another entry in the same termbase. This means that you can click on a hyperlink to jump to the target term and the corresponding entry.
You can create cross-references in descriptive fields where the field content is text-only. It is not possible to create a cross-reference in descriptive fields where the field content consists of picklist values, numeric data or multimedia files. In order to create a cross-reference, you must have write access to the relevant field.
Check that you have write access to the fields which require cross-references. For more information, see Logging in to MultiTerm Online. In addition, note the following:
Certain license restrictions may apply in your MultiTerm environment. For example, if the maximum number of concurrent editors on the network has already been reached, you may be temporarily prevented from carrying out any editing tasks. If necessary, contact your MultiTerm administrator to inform him of your requirements.
If another user is editing the entry you want to edit, you will not be able to open the entry in edit mode.
Go to the Terms view. Perform a search to find the entry that requires a cross-reference. Click the relevant term in the hit list on the left-hand side to open the corresponding entry in the entry pane.
Select a layout from the lower MultiTerm Online toolbar that includes distinctive formatting for cross-reference text. This will make your cross-references clearly visible in the entry pane. For more information about the properties of the layouts that are available to you in a given termbase, contact your MultiTerm administrator.
Click Edit entry on the lower MultiTerm Online toolbar.
Identify the exact text for which you want to create a cross-reference. The cross-reference text must belong to a text field. Select the relevant text and right-click to open the Manage a Cross-reference dialog box. The text field you are working in must not be in an active edit mode.
In the Manage a Cross-reference dialog box, specify the target term for your cross-reference and complete the following fields:
Select a language from the Language drop-down list.
Search the termbase for the cross-reference target term by entering search text in the Target box. Click Search. MultiTerm Online searches the termbase for matching terms in the specified language. Results are displayed in the Hit list drop-down list.
Select a term from the Hit list drop-down list and click Create to confirm the cross-reference. The Manage a Cross-reference dialog box is closed and you are returned to the current entry in edit mode.
The cross-reference text is formatted according to the properties specified in the active layout.
Click Save entry on the lower MultiTerm Online toolbar to save the changes you have made and to exit edit mode. The entry is saved to the termbase and the cross-reference is now available to other termbase users.
To check the cross-reference you have just created, click the hyperlink in the Entry pane; MultiTerm jumps to the target term and displays the corresponding entry.
Open the entry to which the cross-reference belongs in edit mode.
Place your cursor anywhere in the cross-reference and right-click to open the Manage a Cross-reference dialog box.
In the Manage a Cross-reference dialog box, change the target term for your cross-reference:
Select the current target term in the Hit list drop-down list and click Remove to clear the existing link.
Select another term from the existing Hit list or carry out a new search to locate other terms in the termbase. If necessary, specify a different language in the Language drop-down list.
Click Modify to confirm the change. The Manage a Cross-reference dialog box is closed and you are returned to the entry pane. The cross-reference text is still formatted according to the properties specified in the active layout.
Click Save entry on the lower MultiTerm Online toolbar to save the changes you have made and to exit edit mode. The entry is saved to the termbase and the cross-reference is now available to other termbase users.
