Search Methods

The table below outlines the different search methods that are available in MultiTerm Online.

NOTE

Before you begin searching, select the source language that you want to use as a search language.

Search Type

Purpose

Method

Normal

Searches the termbase source language term fields for a specific term.

Select the Normal option, enter the first few characters of the search term in the Search box and click the Run the search now icon. The results of your search are displayed in the hit list. Click on a term to display the corresponding entry.

Fuzzy

Searches the termbase(s) source language term fields for terms that are identical or similar to the search text. Fuzzy searching can find terms that are misspelt or incomplete in the search field.

Select the Fuzzy option. Enter the search text (misspelt or incomplete) in the Search box and click the Run the search now icon. Matching terms are displayed in the hit list. Click on a term to display the corresponding entry.

NOTE: You need to enter a minimum of three characters for a fuzzy search.  Fuzzy searches do not search for words with a length of one or two characters.

Full Text

Searches the termbase source and target language entries for specific text. This searches the whole termbase apart from multimedia fields and entries that have no source language term. It includes all terms and user-defined entry and language fields.

For example, if you have a definition field or a context sentence field in your termbase, this is included in the Full Text search.

Select the Full Text option. Enter the first few characters of the search criteria in the Search box and click the Run the search now icon.  The results of your search are displayed in the hit list. Click on a term to display the corresponding entry.

Wildcard

Searches the termbase source language term fields for all terms that contain a specified string of characters. The specified string of characters may constitute a full word or part of a word. In your search text, use the asterisk (*) as a placeholder for multiple wildcards or unspecified characters. Use the question mark (?) as a placeholder for a single wildcard character.

Select the Normal option. Enter your search text, including wildcard placeholders, in the Search box and click the Run the search now icon. Matching terms are displayed in the hit list. Click on a term to display the corresponding entry.

Filtered

Applies a filter to the default termbase and searches the source language term fields for entries that match the filter criteria.

Click the Click to activate filter <filter name> icon to apply a filter to your search.  Enter your search text  in the Search box and click the Run the search now icon. If you carry out a normal, fuzzy, full text or wildcard search, the filter is automatically applied; search results are taken from entries that have been evaluated according to the filter criteria.

Duplicate Filter

Applies a duplicate or inconsistency filter to the default termbase and searches for duplicate or inconsistent terms.

Click the Click to activate inconsistency filter <filter name> icon to apply a duplicate or inconsistency filter to your search. The search for duplicate or inconsistent terms is carried out immediately and the results are displayed.

NOTE: Duplicate and inconsistent filter search results are displayed differently to other search results.  See Understanding the Results of a Duplicate or Inconsistent Search for more information.

Target Term

Searches the termbase for source language terms that have at least one target term.

On the Settings page, select Search for terms that have at least one target term. Click OK to confirm and to return to the Terms view. MultiTerm Online automatically applies this search constraint during all search operations.
